We are thrilled to announce the completion of the Capitol Hardscape Improvement Project in Downtown Richmond, a significant milestone that our team at James River Nurseries is incredibly proud to have been a part of. This ambitious project, commissioned by the state’s Department of General Services(DGS), involved replacing approximately 60,000 square feet of hardscapes around the historic Capitol.

A Capstone of Historic Renovation

The project serves as the capstone in a series of substantial construction and renovation efforts on Capitol Square, marking a continuation of work that began in 2017 with the new General Assembly Building. As DGS Director Joe Damico stated, this initiative was crucial in enhancing the area’s accessibility and aesthetic appeal, maintaining the historic charm of Capitol Square while updating its infrastructure.

Phased Execution for Minimal Disruption

Our meticulous approach ensured that the project progressed smoothly, starting with the walkways closest to the Capitol and extending to the avenues and sidewalks surrounding it. Despite the extensive nature of the work, we coordinated closely with DGS to ensure that the public could still access the area from the north side of Capitol Square throughout the project duration.

Enhancing Historic Aesthetics

The transformation involved removing old hardscapes, grading, pouring new concrete, and installing bricks and pavers. We used bricks similar to those already present in Capitol Square to ensure a seamless blend with the existing aesthetic. Additionally, the vehicular drive behind the Capitol was resurfaced with brown asphalt pavers, echoing the historic dirt roads that once existed there.

Safety and Accessibility Upgrades

Safety and accessibility wereparamount in our planning and execution.Granite curbs now edge the newhardscapes, and the road behind the Capitol has been raised to curb level, making the area more pedestrian-friendly. Throughout the project, safety fencingwas adjusted to protect workers and the public, ensuring a safe environment foreveryone.

Celebrating a Historic Achievement

The completion of this project not only revitalizes the heart of Richmond but also preserves the historic integrity of Capitol Square. Our team at James River Nurseries is honored to have contributed to such a prestigious project, enhancing the beauty and functionality of one of Virginia’s most iconic landmarks.

We invite you to visit Capitol Square and experience the transformation firsthand. The new hardscapes not only enhance the visual appeal of the area but also improve accessibility, ensuring that the historic charm of Capitol Square can be enjoyed by all.
