At James River Nurseries (JRN), we take pride in every project we touch, and Coalfield Reserve Apartments in Midlothian is no exception. This beautiful community, which now stands as a testament to thoughtful development, showcases a perfect blend of nature and modern living.

Our team at JRN was tasked with transforming the landscape, hardscape, and incorporating artificial turf, all designed to create an inviting and serene outdoor environment for residents to enjoy. From lush greenery to expertly crafted outdoor spaces, our work enhances the natural beauty of the area while providing functional, low-maintenance spaces.

What makes this project truly special is the collaboration with LBD Investments, Bainbridge Construction, Balzer and Assoc., and Dix.Hite. Together, we faced a significant challenge—turning an underutilized green-field site into a thriving community. With natural wetlands and complex topography, initial thoughts were that the site had limited development potential. However, by embracing the land’s unique characteristics, we were able to preserve the existing streams and wetlands, ensuring the landscape provided both a beautiful natural feature and added privacy for residents. This preservation created a peaceful buffer that separates Coalfield Reserve from the surrounding neighborhood, making it a tranquil retreat for its residents.

The design was inspired by Midlothian’s rich coal mining history, giving Coalfield Reserve a distinct sense of place. The natural elements, alongside the innovative landscape architecture, provide a nod to the region’s heritage while offering modern amenities.
