James River Nurseries bids a bittersweet farewell to our team member, Controller Phil Silver, who has dedicated an impressive 24 years of expertise, leadership, and loyalty to our company. As Phil moves on to enjoy his well-deserved retirement, we reflect on his invaluable contributions and look ahead with excitement to welcome Michael Gundlach, who steps into the role with a wealth of experience and a deep connection to the Richmond area and JRN family.

Phil Silver: 24 Years of Dedication

Phil Silver joined James River Nurseries over two decades ago, bringing with him a passion for precision and a dedication to excellence. Over the years, Phil has been a linchpin of our operations, guiding the company’s financial health with his steadfast professionalism and an eye for detail. His contributions to James River Nurseries have been nothing short of wonderful, helping us grow and adapt through changing markets, new challenges, and expanding opportunities. We extend our deepest gratitude to Phil for his years of service, and we wish him all the best as he steps into this new chapter of his life.

Welcoming Michael Gundlach

Stepping into the role of Controller, Michael Gundlach brings a unique blend of experience, familiarity with our team, and a fresh vision for our future. A Richmond local, Michael has a long history with James River Nurseries; he was once part of our landscape crew, working summers as a college student. With a degree from Hampden-Sydney College, where he also played football, Michael later went on to earn his CPA from Virginia Commonwealth University. Since then, he’s developed a strong foundation in accounting within the construction industry, progressing through roles that have given him invaluable insights into the financial intricacies of the field.

Michael’s ties to the Richmond community, combined with his hands-on experience in landscaping and accounting, make him the ideal person to carry on Phil’s legacy. Outside of work, Michael is husband to Lauren and father to two young boys, Connor and Cooper. In his free time, you’ll find him on the golf course or cheering on his favorite football teams, reminiscing about his days as a Hampden-Sydney College player.

A New Chapter at James River Nurseries

With Phil’s retirement and Michael’s arrival, James River Nurseries stands at an exciting crossroads. We’re looking forward to the fresh perspectives and continued stability Michael will bring as we move into the future. His blend of experience, community roots, and hands-on knowledge of our industry will be invaluable assets to our company.

Please join us in extending our heartfelt gratitude to Phil for his years of commitment and in welcoming Michael back to the James River Nurseries family. Here’s to celebrating the legacy of hard work, dedication, and community that Phil leaves behind, and to the new chapter Michael is helping us write.

Thank You, Phil! Welcome, Michael!
